Character Notes - Vanya Bennett

Vanya Bennett
Half-Elf Bard

Alignment: Chaotic Good
Appearance: Fair skin, blonde hair.  Likes to braid colorful ribbons into her hair.

Background: The spoiled offspring of wealthy landowners, Vanya was trained by some of the finest musicians. But when her parents lost their fortune, Vanya set out on her own to see the world and become a famous performer.

Personality: She is a bit egotistical but has a kind heart.  She likes being the center of attention.  She thinks her performances make the world a better place.

Inspiration: Marsha Brady.  Hear me out.  I was having trouble reconciling her Good alignment with her self-centered attitude.  Then I thought of the Brady Bunch.  Marsha is easily the worst of the Brady kids, always caring more about her looks than people's feelings.  And yet, even the worst Brady kid is still more compassionate than the average person.

Vanya wants to help people.  Whether it's because she actually cares, or because she wants the accolades of being a hero, the end result is the same.  And I believe she has the potential to grow more depth as the campaign goes on.

Name: I came up with her name by playing with the word "Vanity".  Originally I named her "Vanara", but I never could remember it.  So I changed it to Vanya.  The surname "Bennett" means "Blessed".

Future Levels: Assuming Roll20 lets me add "custom" subclasses, I plan to go with the College of Glamour (from Xanathar's) at level 3.

Story: All I know about the campaign so far is that we're starting out as members of the Daggerford Militia.  Vanya doesn't seem like the soldier type, but militia can always use healers.  I thought it might be funny if there was a call for Clerics, and she signed up pretending to be a Cleric (of Sune).

Here's the timeline I'm working with, assuming nothing contradicts with how the campaign starts out:
Vanya's parents lose their fortune.  I haven't really settled on what happened, I'm thinking her entire town might have been razed by Orcs or whatever enemy army is active in the area.  Or maybe her parents just made some bad investments.  But she left with their blessing, because they wanted to save her from dealing with their problems, and they even gave her some traveling money.

Vanya had already been wanting to see the world and pursue a music career, so she heads to the most cosmopolitan place she knows, Waterdeep.  She has trouble making it in Waterdeep because, well let's face it, everybody heads to Waterdeep.  It's such a big city, her name is drowned out in a sea of aspiring bards.

So she heads to Daggerford, which smaller, and close enough to Waterdeep to where she can head back when she wants to.  She thinks that if she can make a name for herself here, eventually her fame will travel up to Waterdeep via travelling caravans and whatnot.

But by now, she's used up her money.  She decides to look for more stable work so she can eat, and plans to pursue her dreams on her time off.  And that's when she hears that the militia is hiring.

Character: Raziya "Raz" Furian

This my character for the "Dragon's Demand" Pathfinder Campaign.

Name: Raziya "Raz" Furian
Race: Human (Garundi)
Class: Sorcerer (Celestial Bloodline)
Alignment: Neutral Good
Deity: Erastil (Farmers, Hunters, Tradesmen)
Age: 18
Height: 5' 7"
Weight: 160 lbs.
Eyes: Brown
Hair: White

Background:
Raz is a Sorcerer who thinks she's a Wizard.  She realized early in life that she had a knack for magic, and became a Wizard's apprentice.  But her master knew that she just didn't have a head for magical study, and failed her.  This rejection just drove her harder.  So what if she didn't quite follow the spell procedures to the letter?  A lot of her spells still worked, even if she substituted eye of salamander instead of newt.

So she continues to study Wizardly magic, skimming the magic words and fudging procedures here and there.  She prepares her spells whenever she rests, even though those preparations don't actually do anything.  She has no idea that her magic comes from within rather than from study.  She always carries her favorite spellbook, and doesn't believe she can cast spells without it.

Known Associates:
Erevel - Elf Rogue
Halfbeard - Dwarf Ranger
Lilith - Tiefling Paladin
Tanith Tularn - Human Cleric

Creating the character:
Like the other characters in this campaign, we rolled up the details of her background using Pathfinder's campaign guides.  We ended up with a lot of vague data and worked together to figure out what it meant.  We're still working out some of it.

Here's what we know:  Her parents are soldiers, still alive, and she has two older siblings.  She's from a kingdom that fell.  She's a failed Wizard, and once had a pariah for an acquaintance (which could easily describe some of the other party members).  Raz was once pressured or manipulated into seducing someone young.  She was once incarcerated with Tennith, and she once worked for Lilith.

She has the "attachment" drawback.  One of the DM's suggestions for the attachment was a spellbook, due to her thinking her magic comes from study.  The character concept really popped from there.  Her spellbook is basically Dumbo's feather, and I have no doubt the DM will take advantage of this in a future session (assuming she survives long enough - she's pretty squishy).

Traits: Worldly (Social), Reluctant Apprentice (Magic), Patient Optimist (Religion).

Mini: Lanin, Elf Wizard (D&D Basic Game)

Character: Danica Branford

This was to be my character in our aborted "GURPS" campaign.

Full Name: Danica Branford
Occupation: Inventor
Age: 23
Height: 5'6"
Weight:101

Advantages and Perks:
Independent Income, Intuitive Mathematician, Mathematical Ability, Quick Gadgeteer, Signature Gear (Beam Pistol), Single-Minded, Versatile

Disadvantages and Quirks:
Absent-Mindedness, Clueless, Curious, Obsession (Harness the Power of Light), Long-Term Goal, Social Stigma (Second-Class Citizen: Woman), Squeamish, Workaholic

Background and Personality:
Danica is an scatterbrained inventor, who specializes in useless useful weapons.  Want a gun that only fires at night?  She can build it.  A bicycle that folds out into a sword?  She's on it.  A crossbow that fires pies?  Just give her an hour.  Sure, there's no point, except to prove that it can be done.  Once she has a project, she is completely focused on it, to the point she doesn't notice the world around her.  When not working, she's always thinking about her next project, again failing to notice the world around her.

Creating This Character:
We spent a session deciding what our GURPS campaign would be about and creating our characters.  To choose our campaign setting, each member of our group got to pick one of the system's hundreds of world books to use as inspiration.  As a result, our campaign was going to somehow involve the Napoleonic Wars, Steampunk, Martial Arts, and Dinosaur Hunting.  Interesting mix.  Since I was the one to suggest in Steampunk (actually Ted suggested it first, but when he changed his mind I made it mine), I wanted to make a character who reflected this choice.

Character: Terri Bolton

This is my character in the "Rifts 2112" campaign.

Full Name: Terri Elizabeth Bolton

Occupation:
Mechanic, Part-Time FEMA Emergency Responder

Age: 23

Edges:
McGyver - Can improvise tools from common items.

Hindrances:
Overconfident (Major) - Believes she can do anything.
Big Mouth (Minor) - Can't keep secrets.
Quirk (Minor) - Brags and exaggerates her accomplishments.

Background and Personality:
Terri was always closer to her father than her mother.  Her father was an auto mechanic, and Terri was fascinated with watching him work.  By the time she was in junior high, she could put an engine together with her eyes closed.  Her mother never really approved of Terri's masculine hobbies, and tried to encourage her to be more feminine.  Her father died when she was a senior in high school, and Terri and her mother grew even farther apart.  After high school she went into her dad's business, and started working for FEMA in her off-hours.  In her spare time she enjoys restoring classic cars, and target practice at the shooting range.

Terri is egotistical and proud.  Sometimes she can't help but brag about things she's done, and embellishes her stories to get attention.  Her exaggerations, combined with her inability to keep a secret, have cost her more than one friend.  Worse yet, she believes her own hype, causing her to overestimate her skills.  As a result, sometimes she bites off more than she can chew.

Creating this Character:
As explained in this post, I made her a mechanic because the party didn't have one, I drew inspiration from Robin's doppelganger from How I Met Your Mother, and I picked her name because it was unisex.  I hate to admit to being uncreative, but a bit of her background is similar to Dervish, a character I played on NeverWinter Nights.  But it had to be done.

Given her inspiration, I'm being ambiguous about her sexual orientation.  Part of me wants her to be gay or bi, but another part of me is offended by the butch/tomboy lesbian stereotype.  Hopefully it just won't come up in gameplay.  The party is trying to survive an apocalypse, so it's not like people are going to find time to hit on her.

Character: Malta

This is my character in the Ozcroft campaign.  I already went over her stats and career path in an earlier blog, so this is just extra details.

Full Name:
Malta Klonk

Home Planet:
Tanoose

Race:
Human

Gender:
Female

Age:
30

Crew Position:
Chief Engineer & Ship's Steward

Associates:
Baron Ozwald Haff (Employer), Dr. Melinda Warren (Personal Doctor), Dreya D'Nalor (Crewmate), Lord Kendrick Meadowcroft (Employer), M.C. "Jester" Slate (Crewmate)

Background:
Malta was once a really good student who showed a lot of promise, but her adult life has been filled with career-ending clumsy mistakes.  Her job as a field researcher ended when she almost crashed a research vessel into a moon.  A few years later she lost a job and her eye simultaneously, while running with scissors to help her boss on whom she had spilled coffee... let's just say it was a bad day.  (More specific details in the "Character Creation" blog.)  She is now the engineer for a trading ship called the "Unchaste Harlot", where she hopes to never run into anyone from her past.

Fixing the Jump Drive

Personality, Mannerisms, and Appearance:
Malta has a petite build.  She has black hair, which she keeps cut short (with her propensity for accidents, having long hair around engines would be asking for trouble).  She is missing her left eye, and wears an eye patch.  He has a tribal tattoo on her right bicep from her drifter years.  Malta is clumsy, and can often be seen tripping over her own feet or dropping things.  Despite her past failures, she has an optimistic personality.  When she think she is alone in the engine room, she often talks to the engines, which she considers to be her only true friends.

Nicole De Boer (I added the eye patch)
Creating the Character:
No beating around the bush here:  I rolled horribly.  I crashed and burned on three careers.  Major disaster, minor disaster, major disaster.  After losing an eye in the third career, I figured I would quit while I still had all my fingers.

We were asked to pick a TV celebrity to inspire our character, in order to flesh them out and give each other something to picture.  I had trouble finding one at first.  Someone in the group suggested Molly Shannon, but she wasn't quite what I was looking for.  Being the ship's engineer and picturing a somewhat bubbly personality, I was wanting something closer to Firefly's Kaylee... but I dismissed that for being a little too "on the nose" (many people already consider Traveller the "Firefly RPG").  It was my wife who finally suggested Nicole De Boer, and it clicked the second she said it.  Personality-wise, she's still probably a little bit Kaylee, or maybe Amy Wong from Futurama.

Character - Flora

This is my newest character in the "Unlikely Heroes of Darkmoon Vale" campaign.

Full Name:
Flora Oakwillow

Class:
Seeker

Race:
Hamadryad

Gender:
Female

Alignment:
Good

Deity:
Corellon

Animal Companion:
"Fauna", Displacer Beast

Background:
Flora is one of many Fey creatures that protect the forests of  Darkmoon Vale.  Ever since she was a sapling, she has lived in the woods near Falcon's Hollow.  After the Unlikely Heroes defeated the evil fey at the nightmarish carnival, the Fey Queen requested that Flora serve them as a reward.  At first Flora wasn't sure about leaving her home to go off with these people she didn't know.  But she always obeys the Fey Queen's orders, so she made like a tree and, um, left.

Personality, Mannerisms, and Appearance:
Flora is often intrigued by the odd behavior of "civilized" humanoids, and this curiosity led her to accept duties closer to society.  However, she fears traveling too far from the forest (after all, she has roots there).  Flora loves nature and protects plant life whenever she can.  She has an extreme fear of fire, and isn't particularly fond of termites.  Her hobbies include gardening, archery, hiking, exploration, and standing perfectly still in the sun for long periods of time.  She often travels with her pet Displacer Beast, Fauna.

As a Hamadryad, Flora's appearance changes somewhat depending on what aspect she chooses to present.  At times she looks like a beautiful young nymph with flowers in her hair.  Other times she looks like she is carved from wood, to the point where she can be mistaken for a wooden mannequin if she stands still.

Creating this character:
After Dalia died, Rusty and I tossed a lot of ideas back and forth, and discussed which classes we hadn't seen played very often.  Neither of us could remember seeing anyone play a Seeker, so I thought I'd give it a try.  Since then I've done a little research, and found out just why Seekers aren't very popular.  They're not particularly powerful or effective, and there hasn't been a lot of support for them in the splatbooks.  But I've never been much of an min-maxer, so I don't mind.  Unlike my last group, this one doesn't have a judgmental optimizer who questions everyone's design choices.  It's nice to have the freedom to play a character built with roleplay in mind.  Flora's not necessarily a class the party really needs at the moment, but I hope she at least makes things interesting.

Regarding race, I've always wanted to play some sort of fey creature.  We had just finished dealing with the Fey Queen, so this was a good time for a fey character to enter the party.

Character - Dalia

This is my new character in the "Unlikely Heroes of Darkmoon Vale" campaign.

Full Name:
Dalia Lockwood

Class:
Ardent

Race:
Human

Gender:
Female

Alignment:
Good

Deity:
Sarenrae

Background:
As a teen, Dalia lived a charmed life.  She wasn't from a wealthy or prestigious family, but somehow she was unusually popular with her peers.  Doors were always opened for her, both literally and figuratively.  She never thought much about why, she just figured she deserved it for being pretty.  The idea that she might have some latent mental powers, and that she might be subconsciously influencing people with her mind... well, her thoughts just didn't run that deep.

When she was twenty, she met a soldier named Duncan Cwyburn.  He was an officer of the Eagle Knights, a militia devoted to justice.  She was surprised to find that he was immune to her charms.  What's more, he recognized her psionic abilities for what they were, and convinced her that she could be more than just a pretty face.  She joined the Knights, where she learned to control her psionic abilities, for battle and for defense.  More importantly, they taught her to be a responsible person, instead of a petty socialite.

Dalia has always had a knack for the healing arts, so her primary training is in the field of combat medicine.  Two years have passed since Dalia began her training, and her superiors have decided it's time for her to get some field experience.  Recently stories have begun to spread about a group of busy adventurers in Falcon's Hollow, and their refusal to cooperate with the unscrupulous aristocrat Thuldrin Kreed.  The Knights have been eying Kreed's suspicious dealings for a while, but have neither the evidence nor the legal power to take any action against him.  Perhaps these new adventurers might know something?  Dalia has been sent to check it out.

Personality, Mannerisms, and Appearance:
Dalia has red hair and attractive features.  As a representative of the Eagle Knights, she is the epitome of courtesy and chivalry.  Her psionic-enhanced empathy, combined with her social training, sometimes allows her to gain control of conversations in order to get what she wants.  When insulted, she keeps her temper in check, and responds with the civility one would expect from a knight.  In short, she's nice... until it's time to not be nice.  Once things turn physical, she has no qualms about smashing faces and severing limbs.

Creating this character:
This character came together pretty much by itself.  I rolled her race and class randomly to get Human Ardent.  Our party has been greatly lacking a healer, so I mostly took healing options when building her.  I picked the "Knight Hospitaler" theme and the "Surgeon" background, after which her combat medic background practically wrote itself.  Going through my miniatures, I only found one that really fit the build, so I based the character's appearance on the mini.

Her name also sort of evolved by itself.  I wasn't really thinking about names while building her, so I kept calling her "Ardent" in my head.  Subconsciously this evolved into "Dale", probably because of Flash Gordon's "Dale Arden".  But I didn't really like the name Dale, so I morphed it into Dalia.

Character - Vex

This is my new character in the Pathfinder "Unlikely Heroes of Darkmoon Vale" campaign.

Full Name:
Nishallivexiania "Vex" Corman

Class:

Monk

Race:

Half-Elf

Gender:

Female

Alignment:

Lawful Good

Deity:
Irori

Background:
Vex has no memory of her parents, having been given over to the monastary as an infant.  The monastary itself knows few details, and has told her even less.  All Vex knows is that she's the child of a human soldier and an elf maiden.

Vex sometimes wonders why her parents left her.  Was theirs a forbidden love, an illicit affair that had to be kept hidden?  Were her parents killed, just barely getting Vex to safety before succumbing to their wounds?  Was her father part of an evil invading army, who took her mother's innocence as part of the spoils of war?  Or perhaps her mother was the aggressor, tempting Vex's father away from his family like a libinious nymph, and later abandoning her offspring to free her for more conquests.  Maybe they were royalty, and Vex was kidnapped as part of a ransom scheme that went ended badly.  Or perhaps they simply felt their relationship was a mistake, and simply didn't want the hassle of raising a mixed-breed child.

Whenever Vex finds herself wondering about her origins, she always comes to the same final conclusion:  "Stop letting you mind wander, you nitwit!"  Because if her monastic upbringing has taught her anything, it's that idle speculation benefits no one.

Vex has spent the majority of her life at the monastery. There she has learned to focus her strength to a degree that others often find surprising. But while she is one of the stronger members of her order, she's had difficulty cultivating the wisdom she needs to temper that strength. Try as she might, she has never been able to focus her mental energies as easily as she commands her fists. Also, her masters are bothered by the amount of pride Vex seems to have in her power, and would like to see her learn a bit of humility. For this reason, she has been asked to leave the monastery for a while, on a quest for self-improvement. They hope that the difficulties she faces out in the world will cause her to develop her skills out of necessity.

Just a few months into this journey of enlightenment, she was exploring a Dwarven monastery with some other adventurers, when she was bitten by a large spider. This spider's venom sapped a lot of her strength. While Vex is distressed at losing her greatest asset, and hopes to recover as quickly as possible, she also sees this as a humbling experience that could be good for her.  It could be an opportunity for her to rely on her other attributes, instead of solving all her problems with her fists.  After all, one must often suffer in order to learn.

Personality, Mannerisms, and Appearance:
Vex believes in staying focused on the task at hand, and dislikes chatter. She feels that her time is not to be wasted, and all waking moments should be spent bettering herself. While her companions might stop to talk about the weather or to compliment each other's choice of clothing, Vex spends her free time meditating or practicing her combat skills.  Her goal is total perfection in mind and body.

While Vex generally feels that hobbies are a pointless distraction, she does collect religious artifacts.  She is often curt and to-the-point when talking to other adults, but she has a soft spot for children.
Vex gets her dark skin and hair from her father, and she has her mother's green eyes.  She has a tattoo of a crane - the symbol of her order - on her left forearm.

Creating this character:
Vex was a character I played briefly in NeverWinter Nights.  That version was an Elven Monk who couldn't speak due to damaged vocal chords.  I am halfway considering having this version of the character eventually take a vow of silence.

Unfortunately I rolled badly for Wisdom, a key stat for Monks, but I'm trying to make up for it as best as I can.  I briefly considered making her a Dwarf for the stat bonuses, but one of the reasons I'm in this campaign is to get away from 4e's insistence on min-maxing.

I couldn't find a mini I really liked.  The closest I could find is the Whirling Steel Monk.  As usual I let my mini choice influence my character's appearance.  Due to the mini's skin tone, I've decided her father's bloodline comes from the Pathfinder equivalent of Asia or Kara-Tur.

Character - Calla Noble

This is my new character in the Temple of Elemental Evil campaign.

Name:
Calla Noble

Class:

Fighter (Essentials Knight)

Race:

Human

Gender:

Female

Alignment:

Good

Background:
Calla Felch was born in the slums of Urnst. Her mother was an alchoholic prostitute, and her father was con artist who made a living forging documents. From an early age Calla vowed not to grow up like them. Some local pirates (friends of her father) taught her how to handle a sword, and she learned quickly. As soon as she was old enough, she travelled to Furyondy to join the Swordsman's Guild. Using papers her father had once forged for a con, she joined the Guild under the name of Calla Noble, and eventually became one of the honorable Knights of Furyondy.

During a mission to investigate the rumors surrounding the Temple of Elemental Evil, her squad was attacked by gnolls.  She was knocked out during the battle, and the gnolls probably assumed she was dead.  As the only survivor, Calla should have gone back to Furyondy to report the disaster. However, she is determined to complete her mission or die trying.

Personality, Mannerisms, and Appearance:
Calla is honorable and brave, but she can also be stubborn and hard-headed. She is embarrased by her early upbringing, and works hard to keep her parentage a secret. Though she has truly earned every accolade she has received, she still worries that she's living a lie. She constantly pushes herself to accomplish more great deeds, so she can earn the right to be proud. Her worries are probably groundless at this point. It's doubtful that her superiors continually re-check the backgrounds of each of their troops. As far as they're concerned, a sword is a sword, and they need all the soldiers they can get. Nevertheless, the fear of discovery haunts her.

Calla has black hair and brown eyes. Despite a few battle scars, she has above-average beauty. Her social graces, however, could use some work. She tends to be single-minded, and is often perceived as rude.

Creating this character:
I built a version of Calla a couple of years ago, as a Guardian Fighter.  This was back when there was only one PHB.  She was intended to be my second LFR character once Voranna reached the next play tier.  But by the time Voranna reached level 5, there were more classes out there to choose from, and suddenly a plain ol' fighter just wasn't as interesting.

I have a tendency to play support/ranged characters, but I've been in the mood lately to play something more tanky.  So I'm going to give this a shot, and see how I like it.  If she dies right off the bat, I've also worked up a couple of other characters as backups.

The background is slightly stolen from "A Knight's Tale".

Character - Kryla Bloodfang

This is my current character in the Temple of Elemental Evil campaign.

Name:
Krylanna "Kryla" Bloodfang

Class:

Sorcerer (Cosmic)

Race:

Dragonborn

Gender:

Female

Alignment:

Good

Deity:
Bahamut

Background:
Although she comes from a long line of proud dragonborn warriors, Kryla Bloodfang was different right from the start. Even her egg was marked with unusual patterns resembling planets and stars. While others in her family trained to be soldiers, Kryla had a natural talent for spellcasting. Her family never understood her fascination with astrology and magic, and Kryla left her home early so she could pursue her interests without being pressured to join the militia. Her parents sent her brother, Rhogar, to find her and bring her home. She's run into him a few times since then, but he hasn't been able to convince her to return home. (Nor does he really want to, as Rhogar is enjoying his travels as well.) Kryla believes she is destined for something great, but has no idea what. She now wanders from town to town, hoping to find her life's purpose.

Personality, Mannerisms, and Appearance:
Kryla is outgoing and enjoys the extra attention that her species often receives from other races. She loves studying the behaviors of other peoples, and will sometimes say or do shocking things just to see the reaction. Whether for the greater good or just for fun, she often attempts to manipulate people through kind words or intimidation.

She has gold scales and red eyes. She is thin for a Dragonborn, but tall, and usually stands out in a crowd. In order to turn even more heads, Kryla enjoys wearing garish clothing, in a large array of bright clashing colors. She often passes the time by singing ancient songs of her race. She also likes to dabble in fortune-telling, but her predictions aren't usually any more accurate than random guessing. It is her own divinations that led her to believe that she has an important future ahead of her.

Even though Kryla rejected her clan's predilection for close combat, she still embraces their attitude towards honor. She is highly motivated to do the right thing, and has no problem risking her life to help others. Her self-foretold destiny enhances her courage - she doesn't believe it is her fate to die until she has accomplished something historic. Even with this possible delusion, she's still rational enough not to tempt fate by doing something outright stupid. After all, fate can always pick a new hero if it needs to.

While Kryla has done some research on magic, as a sorcerer her abilities are more innate than learned. She's a "learn by doing" type of caster, always ready to experiment even if the situation is risky. Because she is an acid-spitter (as is the rest of the Bloodfang clan), she has a special interest in acid-based spells.

Creating this character:
Kryla was one of the characters I played in LFR. I only got to play her for a few sessions before I stopped attending LFR. But I really enjoyed the Dragonborn Cosmic Sorcerer build, so I decided to import her into our new campaign.

Character - Talindra Seryth

This is my current character in the Artifact Hunters: The Avatar of Torm campaign.

Name:
Talindra "Tal" Seryth

Class:

Avenger

Race:

Razorclaw Shifter

Gender:

Female

Alignment:

Good

Deity:
Sune

Background:

Tal was born to a tribe of forest-dwelling Razorclaw Shifters. Though the members of her tribe all had tan skin and brown hair, Tal's colorings were shades of gray and black. This might have simply been a natural genetic mutation, but the tribe believed it to be the mark of an evil god. Fearing a bad omen, they took the infant to a clearing on the other side of the forest, and left her there to die.

Whether by pure chance or divine intervention, the infant was found by a member of the Talons of Retribution, a reclusive order of religious assassins. A somewhat darker offshoot of the Harpers, the Talons are a multi-denominational cult, united by their common hatred of Bane.

The Talons also thought this strange baby was a sign from the gods, but unlike the Shifter tribe, they interpreted it as a good omen. And so they took her in and raised her, training her from infancy for one purpose - to seek out and destroy Bane worshipers.

Personality, Mannerisms, and Appearance:
Tal has a kind heart, but others often see her as rude and unapproachable. She is obsessed with her life's mission, and has little use for hobbies or small talk.

When she shows a sense of humor at all, it tends toward insults and sarcasm, mostly because she holds her teammates up to her standards of discipline. When she fails at something herself, she obsesses over it internally, and will spend days replaying the event in her head and analyzing where she went wrong. Despite her single-mindedness, she has a soft spot for art and beauty.

Tal has catlike facial features, which become more pronounced when she is angry. While most members of her species have brown or tan skin and hair, Tal's colors are more gray and black. She has bright green eyes, often her only visible feature when she's in the shadows. She is missing part of her left ear, and has scars all over her body. Most are the result of a childhood spent in training. She has a small tattoo on her inner left wrist, the symbol of her religious order. She usually wears dark clothing.

Creating this character:
When our last campaign ended, we were in a bit of a rush to decide what to do next. I wanted to try something new, and was open to anything. Someone suggested Avenger, a class which I knew nothing about. I've had the PHB2 since it was released, but for some reason I'd never read the pages on that class. I've got to say, it's interesting. Not as damaging as a normal striker, but it makes up for it by hitting more often.

Originally Tal was going to be an Elf. I even chose the name "Talindra" by searching the web for pages on Elf names. The only thing that bothered me was I was tired of elves. Okay, technically I've not played a full-blood elf in 4e. I played a few in NeverWinter Nights, and in 4e I've played Half-Elves, Drow, and Eladrin. But I still wanted to do something less Elven. At the last minute, less than an hour before I left the house for our first session, I decided to make her a Shifter. I've always liked cats, and I've always wanted to play something catlike. Plus, Shifters have the same stat synergy as Elves for the Avenger class. Our resident statcruncher thinks I've made a mistake, since Elves are faster and can shift through rough terrain. But I've always preferred fluff over crunch.

The next problem was choosing a miniature. I didn't have a mini that really looked like a female shifter, much less one with a greatsword. I finally went with the Catfolk Wilder:

The problem is, Shifters don't typically have black fur. I could have lived with that - a mini doesn't have to look a exactly like your character. But I like the way the mini looks. So I wrote Tal a background that gives her darker skin and hair. The weapons are still wrong, but it's not like she couldn't hold two swords. Maybe that's what she looked like in training. These days she carries a single large blade and wears black robes, but she might occasionally look like her mini when she's practicing.

Character - Aria Thatcher

This was my character in the Scarred Lands campaign.

Name:
Aria Thatcher

Class:

Bard

Race:

Half-Elf

Gender:

Female

Alignment:

Good

Background:

Aria is a Half-Elf, but she was raised by two human farmers. She was the product of an affair between her human mother and an Elf. Aria has never met her real father, and knows nothing about him. Aria's stepfather forgave his wife's infidelity, but he never really grew close to his stepdaughter.

One day when Aria was six, a traveling minstrel passed through the area, and spent a few hours entertaining local farmers. He sang a lot of songs and performed some magic tricks. This was the first time Aria realized that the world was bigger than just the farm, and she knew right away that she wanted to know more about everything.

Growing up, Aria spent her days doing farm chores, and her nights studying any subject she could learn. She would pick up any books she could get her hands on, even if it was just a handful of torn pages from a discarded tome. Therefore she ended up learning a small amount on a wide variety of subjects. She found farm life to be a bore, and these books opened the world to her, showing her that the world was full of interesting things.

Her biggest love was music. Mostly she sang, but she would learn to play any musical instrument she could find or make. She also had a bit of natural talent for Arcane magic, but couldn't get her hands on enough magic books to fully study the subject. But she did discover early on that she could mix Arcane magic with her singing to produce some interesting effects.

The other farmers in the community adored her, and she would always entertain them at gatherings. She enjoyed the attention, but it also made her long for bigger audiences and larger towns. At 16 she left home. She knew that if she stayed, she would grow up to be just another farmer. There weren't any opportunities in the area for entertainers, so she decided to travel until she could find someplace where she could make a living as a singer. And maybe even become a world-famous performer someday.

As of the first session of the Campaign, Aria is 18 years old, and has spent the last two years wandering from town to town, seeing the world.

Personality, Mannerisms, and Appearance:
Aria wears bright-colored clothing, and wears her red hair in outrageous styles. She is very outgoing, and loves meeting new people.

Aria is flighty, and has trouble thinking far enough ahead to have long-term life goals. She would like to be a famous singer, recognized and loved everywhere she goes. While she does have a great singing voice, she spreads herself a little thin when it comes to her other hobbies: Learning new musical instruments, comedy, dancing (badly), the healing arts, exploration, arcane research, and collecting things. She collects musical instruments, rare books, rituals, wands, sheet music, pretty objects, and random things she finds that she thinks she might need later (before forgetting about them). She also tries to keep a stock of clothing dye, so she can decorate any new clothing in bright colors.

She is a bit clumsy. Sometimes she dances as part of her routine, but she is not a good dancer. Often her audience thinks her silly movements and accidental pratfalls are intentional comedy. She doesn't always realize whether she's being laughed at or laughed with, but as long as they clap, Aria is happy. People don't take her seriously, which is usually okay with her, because she's rarely serious. However, when she really is serious, and people still dismiss her, she finds it frustrating.

Aria is book smart, but lacks common sense. She's can memorize a book overnight, but still makes bad decisions. She puts her emotions above her better judgment, especially when it involves helping people. She is easily swayed by con artists with sad stories. She is impulsive, and makes snap decisions without thinking it through. She might be a handful at times, but people generally like her anyway.

As a general rule, Aria thinks the best of people until proven otherwise (and sometimes even afterward). She trusts every member of the party, and would probably continue to do so even if she were to find one stealing her coin purse.

Aria thinks of Blast as the little brother she never had. She thinks of Gorn as the big brother who protects you from bullies. For a while she had a small crush on Alek Corman, but he died before it could grow into anything more. She doesn't know what to think yet of her newest companions, Shade and Thorfin, but as usual, she trusts them more than she really should this early into the relationship.

On first impression, most people who meet Aria think she's angelic and pure of heart. And to some extent, they're right. Other people's double entendres often go right over her head, due to her naiveté. Under normal circumstances, the harshest curse she uses is, "Oh, gooseberries!" But there are two exceptions to this virginesque demeanor. When she is very angry, she has been known to let out a string of magically-enhanced curses and insults that are so strong they actually cause pain. Also, when she performs her comedy routines (if it is appropriate for the venue), she has been known to delve into the raunchy side of humor. She is especially proud of her collection of dirty limericks, which she has collected from many sources during her travels.

She also writes limericks of her own, but hers are a bit more family-friendly... and not very good. Here are some of her more memorable verses.  (Let's see how many recognize the reference to the movie "The Court Jester".)

There once was a red-haired Half-Elf;
Who put her life's dreams on a shelf
With no one to test her
skills as a jester
She just made a fool of herself.

There once was a man from Calasta
Who learned how to win at Canasta
His wife was his teacher
And when he finally beat her
He said, "The student has become the Masta!"

There once was a drunkard from Mansk
Who got caught in the park without pantsk
As he got arrested,
He loudly protested,
"I was just going to water the plantsk!"

There once was a Half-Orc named Gorn
Who met with the Minotaur Dorrn.
There was confusion with names
Until Gorn, now insane,
Had steak dinner... but spit out the horns.

A right motley group from Calasta
A Half-Orc, a Gnome, and two casters
With an item of renown
Took a cart and fled town
While the Half-Orc kept yelling "Drive faster!"

My Characters - Past, Present, and Future

Currently I'm only playing in LFR sessions. My first LFR character - Voranna, the Eladrin Archer Ranger - recently hit level 5, so I had to make another low-tier character. I just started playing Kryla, the Dragonborn Cosmic Sorcerer last month. I'm really hoping to find another D&D group soon, because I'm tired of DMing, and I have a lot of characters I'd like to play eventually. Most of them aren't optimized enough to survive an LFR session, and would be better for a roleplay group. One thing I always like to think about when coming up with a new character is their primary motivation. I see too many characters designed around a love of money. There's nothing wrong with that; in fact it's a very good motivator, and it probably helps the roleplay when the character and player have the same motivations. But it's also boring. Personally, I think it's kind of neat when a player knows that his character would probably give some gold to the beggar, but the player doesn't want to part with the coinage. I also like the in-party conflict that occurs when they aren't all doing it for the same reasons. When one character wants to go after the treasure, while another character wants to save the orphans, it can lead to some interesting interactions.

When I played Nara Cavell in the Tantris campaign, I made religion her primary motivator. She was kind and caring, and truly wanted to eliminate any suffering she saw - including that of her enemies. The problem was I overdid it, to the point that she was annoying to the party, and sometimes I was actually annoyed at myself when I played her. If I ever have the opportunity to play her again, she will have matured a little, having seen more of the world. She'll still be religious and caring, but hopefully she'll be better at seeing the big picture.

Voranna Elun, my LFR Archer, is also motivated more by kindness than money, but she's not nearly as ridiculous about it as Nara was. But if she came across an injured creature, even of the type usually considered hostile, she probably would tend to its wounds. Being a ranger, she really doesn't have as much use for money as other characters. She tends to live a simple life, sleeping in the forest and foraging for food. She gets claustrophobic in crowded cities, and is much more relaxed in a natural environment. Of course, there's not as much room for roleplay in the LFR sessions anyway, so I haven't found many opportunities to show off her personality. In a couple of levels, I plan to have Voranna multiclass as a Cleric of Silvanus, to represent her dedication to preserving life.

Kryla Bloodfang, my Dragonborn Sorcerer, thrives on attention. She dresses in wild colors and tries to get noticed. She loves studying the reactions of other people when they first see her, and finds it fun to scare people. She likes using her powers of intimidation, but it is just a bluff - she doesn't really intend to do these people harm (most of the time). But again, I don't know if the others at the table will every actually pick up on these traits, because it's so hard to roleplay at LFR sessions. Even when I have an opportunity to show off, my general shyness usually causes me to lock up. I'm a lot more comfortable roleplaying at home games with people I know. What follows are some other characters that I'd like to try someday. I don't know why, but I've been itching to play a red-haired Half-Elf lately. Also, Charisma is my current favorite stat. So I'm expecting my next character will be some sort of Warlock, Sorcerer, Bard, or some combination of the above. So a few of these characters might be a bit similar to each other, while I try to decide which ones I want to play most. In other words, if I play Lynnia first, then I might never play Aria, or at least she might be totally rewritten by the time I get to her.

Lynnia Krynn is my current favorite. She is a Half-Elf Warlock (Fey Pact), or possibly a Warlock/Rogue. Lynnia's primary motivation is information. She is a dabbler, who likes to learn a lot of new things, but she always gets bored before she becomes an expert on any subject. She will most likely multiclass Bard, and will take a lot of skill-related feats like Jack of all Trades or Bardic Knowledge. If there's room she might take the Linguist feat a couple of times. Lynnia always leaps before she looks, and will risk her life just to find a rare book... which she will probably never finish.

Sundra Fane is an Elf Cleric. She hates battle, but likes to help people. She will take every possible healing option available. She might work for LFR games, as long as the other party members can keep her safe. Nobody ever complains about having a healer in the party. If I play this character, I will try very hard not to make her as annoying as Nara.

Zarra D'Argo is a Drow Rogue, or possibly a Rogue/Warlock. I would say her primary motivation is probably exploration. She spent her youth in the Underdark, where the scenery never changes. She's amazed by the variety on the surface world - forests, deserts, cities, tundras; changing weather, day and night, and so on. Zarra is a good person who escaped the corruption of her evil race, but she isn't a rip-off of you-know-who. She's good-hearted, but she isn't "nice". She has a sarcastic sense of humor, enjoys making fun of her teammates, and rarely gets close to people. But when the going gets tough, her party knows they can count on her, and she wouldn't betray them for any price.

Calla Noble is a Half-Elf Battlemind. This one started as a Guardian Fighter. I'm convinced that the majority of people who play Fighters in 4e are doing it wrong. I see them build characters designed to rush in and do the most damage, but in 4e that's really more the role of a Striker. You should let the Fighters draw the fire and keep the enemies busy, while the Rogues and Rangers sneak in and do the real damage. So I want to try a really durable character who can soak up a lot of attacks. I had already statted her out as a heavily armored Human Fighter, but then PHB3 came out and the Battlemind just looked so much more interesting. With Calla I'm planning to take every defensive feat and power. I plan to take a lot of the PHB3's skill-based powers; specifically the Endurance- and Heal-based powers. So she'll play a secondary role as a healer. Oh, and her primary motivation is probably honor.

Vex is an Elf Monk. I just want to try one, they look neat. She moves fast around the battlefield, punching and kicking everything in sight. As you can tell from the portrait, I'm kind of picturing Leeloo from The 5th Element. I would like Vex to be mute, or at least have taken some sort of vow of silence, but I'm afraid I'll be accused of being antisocial.

Vanya Scarm is a Human Barbarian. I don't actually have any interest in playing a 4e Barbarian, so I probably won't get around to this one. But I did give her a big long backstory that I hate to go to waste. She comes from a barbarian tribe called "The Tribe of the Scarred Mountain". The tribal villiage is located at the base of a large mountain in Icewind Dale (or whatever setting-appropriate icy mountainous region). They worship Tempus (or Kord, or other setting-appropriate god of battle), but believe that the Scarred Mountain is a sacred place. They believe that a great battle took place there between Tempus and a powerful enemy, and that their mighty blows created the gorge that gives the mountain its name. Tribe marriages are arranged, based on age. When an unmarried tribe member reaches 16 years, they are usually betrothed to the next youngest tribe member of the opposite sex. When the second one reaches 16, they are married. (They start young because life spans are short in that environment.) Children are raised by the tribe rather than by parents. Before marriage, tribe members must leave the villiage to go on a spiritual journey called a "Kthaya". (Sort of like a Native American vision quest.) This Kthaya includes different tasks for different people, set forth individually by the tribal chieftan. These challenges often exploit a person's specific weaknesses. (If a person is afraid of spiders, part of the test might be to sleep in a nest of spiders or slay a giant spider, etc.) Some Kthaya tasks/rules are universal. For example, participants are not allowed to bring food, and must eat only what they hunt and kill during the journey. All participants must climb to the top of the Scarred Mountain and fast until they hear the voice of Tempus. Most tasks take place on or around the Scarred Mountain. As part of the Kthaya, Female tribe members also ritualistically scar their faces. This tradition evolved from an old tribal saying: "Never marry a beautiful woman, other men will desire her, and she will betray you." So the scarring symbolically makes you less beautiful. It is a sign of betrothal, like wedding rings, but it is also considered good luck for the marriage. Some women just give themselves a couple of simple, understated scars, while others go overboard and practically shred their faces, while still others take a more artistic approach and carve intricate designs and symbols into their skin. (The obvious question is why men don't have the same tradition, but the tribe is sexist in that respect. On the other hand, men who cheat on their wives are executed, while cheating women go unpunished, so the women don't always get the short end of the stick.) When Vanya returned from her tasks, her tribe had been slaughtered by giants. She never found her husband's body. Since he was on a journey at the same time she was, it's possible he wasn't killed, but she searched all the surrounding land and never found him. These journeys take different amounts of time for different people, so he might have returned before the battle. Or he might have been killed during his journey, as sometimes happens. He might have even been involved in the tribe's destruction, though such a thought would never occur to Vanya. Still, Vanya didn't know him very well, so it's possible. Vanya tried to follow the giant tracks, but there was heavy snowfall. Eventually she tried to kill herself with honor. She threw herself from the highest peak of their sacred mountain, in hopes of her reuniting her soul with her clan. She passed out in midair, woke up in a snowdrift, completely uninjured. She doesn't know how she survived, but believes it was her god that saved her. Out-of-character, I really don't know either, and I'm leaving it up to the DM in case he ever wants to expand on it. Vanya has black hair, but is usually bald. She shaves her head whenever she takes a life, so if you see her with hair, it's been a while since she's been in battle. She collects parts of enemies (claws, etc) for necklace. She feels it gives her strength. She fears the undead; they're just unnatural. People of her tribe have no surnames, so she uses "Scarm" (short for Scarred Mountain).

Aria Thatcher is a Half-Elf Bard. Though she is a half-elf, she is the daughter of two human farmers (which was a bit of an unhappy surprise to the father). Literally being a red-headed stepchild, she became a source of friction between her parents, and she left home early to study music in Waterdeep. Aria is very outgoing, and has a tendency to speak without thinking. She is booksmart, but often makes bad decisions. She has a very silly sense of humor, and doesn't understand why others don't laugh at her bad puns. Aria is sort of evolved from a character I once played in Neverwinter Nights, Sillia Aylomein.

Galea Clowder is a Razorclaw Shifter Druid. This is just something crazy I'd like to try sometime. I love cats, so I wanted to make this one totally cat-themed. In addition to her primary animal form being some sort of cat, she will also take any possible cat companion options I can find, such as multiclassing Shaman (spirit companion) making her a Hybrid Ranger (Beast Mastery option) or building her so she qualifies for a familiar feat. I have not figured out a motivation for her yet, but it will probably be related to her love of nature.

Brynwyn Elswyth is an Elf Ranger. Or possibly a Ranger/Rogue Hybrid. She was one of my NeverWinter Nights characters. She's has a bubbly personality, but is prone to periods of depression, due to a tragedy in her past. Her backstory is here.

Dervish is a human fighter; I haven't decided which type. Another NWN character I'd like to try in PnP someday. Her real name is Priscilla, but she hates the name because it sounds too girly. She comes from Cormyr (or setting-appropriate honor-themed kingdom), and was raised as a tomboy. Her father spent years trying to get her to act like a lady, but his repeated efforts just made their relationship worse, until she left home to prove herself in the world. Her expanded backstory is here.

Whisper is a human Rogue. She's based on a character in a sci-fi comic I used to draw. Her real name is Alterra Sarr. She was convicted of a murder she didn't commit, so now she's on the run from the law. She tries to stay in the shadows as much as possible (so she's probably a Shadowy Rogue). She has tattoos on her arms that indicate her prisoner status, so of course she keeps them covered. She is a good person and wants very much to help people, but she has to balance that with the necessity of keeping her identity hidden.

Tao Xiang is a human Sorcerer. Another NWN character, originally named Taochi or sometimes Tao-Chi. She's from Kara-Tur (or other setting-appropriate exotic land). In NWN I played her as a Fighter/Bard/Red Dragon Disciple, but in 4e I'd probably make her a Dragon Magic Sorcerer. But one way or another she'll have some connection to dragons. Tao enjoys reading fortunes - in NWN I would give actual Tarot readings through her.

Pepper Proudfire is a Halfling Fighter. I played her in NWN, where she was a dual-wielding Kukri Weapon Master (and it takes a LOT of feats to accomplish that). In 4e, she would probably be a Tempest Fighter. She has a spunky personality, and reminds me of one of those toy dog breeds that think they're larger than they are.

Character - Sillia Aylomein

This is a character I've played in two Neverwinter Nights modules. I picked her name using NWN's random name generator, but "Sillia" really did end up fitting her silly personality. She was a total flake, but was really fun to play. I might remake her for a PnP game sometime.

Note, the locations mentioned (Alta, Fertilund, etc) are from my "Itropa" module, names I reused when I started my campaign world of Praktas.

------------------------------

Dear Diary,
It's been a while since I've had a chance to write in you. I forgot to bring you with me to camp, and I've been waiting to write all summer. I learned so much this summer, about singing, and acting, and playing instruments, and everything else that comes with being a bard. My choir director, Mr. Luute, was a real stiff, with no sense of humor whatsoever. Maybe I shouldn't have put blue dye in his hair gel, but it was hard to resist. And the things I got to see! One time a classmate of mine got chased by a bear! And one time, at bard camp, I saw two grazelles fight! And one time, at bard camp, I saw a bunch of fairies fly by! There was so much to see and do, I hardly had time for my classes. I can't wait to go back. I hope this school year goes by fast.
-Sillia

Dear Diary,
Tomorrow I start school at "Virtuoso College" in Alta. I just finished decorating my dorm room; it's really cool. I've painted the walls hot pink and purple... I hope my roommate doesn't mind. I'm nervous and excited about tomorrow. My parents say it's an honor just to be accepted here, it means I have real talent. Mom says she's been putting money aside for years to put me here, so I hope I don't disappoint her. My parents left this morning; they're probably halfway back to Fertilund right now. Back to their humdrum lives of plowing and planting... it used to be my life too. I'm so glad to have this opportunity. I miss my family already, even bratty Chris. I can't wait 'till spring break so I can see them again.
-Sillia

Dear Diary,
I hate this place! I hate it, I hate it, I hate it! Everyone in Alta is so stuck up. They laugh at me for not coming from a rich family. They make fun of my clothes, because I like to wear bright colors instead of their snooty black suits. Today a teacher yelled at me for smiling in class. Everyone's so serious here! Even my roommate hates me.
-Sillia

Dear Diary,
Spring break is almost here. I was planning to go see my family, but now I don't know. I have the chance to go on the "Musicruise"... it's a week-long boatride with a lot of famous musicians performing. I didn't think I'd be allowed to go, because it's during the same week as our mid-term exams. But my classmates told me they're moving spring break up a week to coincide with the Musicruise, and we'll have mid-terms when we get back. It sounds like a lot of fun... but... my family really wanted me to visit them for Spring break. So I guess I have a pretty big decision to make... should I bring the pink dress or the blue one to the Musicruise?
-Sillia

Dear Diary,
It's my second day on the Musicruise, and I'm having a great time. One of my favorite music stars told me I had a voice like an angel! He gave me so many compliments, I swear I was in heaven. Okay, he took some of it back after I refused to join him in his cabin, but I'm sure his compliments were sincere. I'm going to be a star someday, I know it.
-Sillia

Dear Diary,
My classmates lied. I missed mid-terms, and I've been expelled. I can't go home now, to face my parents. They'll be so disappointed with me. I managed to intercept the expellation notice before it was sent to my parents, so as far as they know I'm still at school. I think I'm going to keep it that way. I'm going to travel a bit, see the world, and try to become a big star. If I can make it big before the school year's over, my parents will still be proud of me. And I will make it big. I know it.
-Sillia

Character - Brynwyn Elswyth

Note: Brynwyn Elswyth was one of my first Neverwinter Nights characters. I played her on the server "The Silver Marches", and later used her on a couple of other servers as well. She was a very energetic, spritely character, naive but good-hearted.

Despite her seemingly-unsinkable cheerfulness, she did have a bit of a tragic backstory:

***

The sky explodes with lightning, and for a half second the world is consumed with white fire. A wet, shivering elf takes refuge under an ancient tree. She sits with her knees drawn up to her chest, hugging her calves. With each crash of thunder she buries her tearful face in her knees.

She is young, but not a child. She is naive, but not unintelligent. She knows the thunder won't hurt her. But still, she is afraid. Every rip of thunder punctuates her existing fears.

"How did I get here? Why am I alone? Why did I stray so far?" She asks these questions softly, nestling closer to the scant shelter of the tree. The questions are rhetorical; she already knows the answers, but doesn't dare ask the real question, burning beneath her dread: "Why am I such a failure?"

Her mother's quiver lies in the mud beside her, half-sinking into the muck. She pats it with her hand, seeking the reassurance it provides. It is a symbol of both love and protection. Also beside her is a bow, but she has no love for the weapon. To her, it is the embodiment of death and failure, and she hopes to replace it with another bow soon.

Another clap of thunder, and again she buries her face. In the howling wind is her father's voice, urging her to be strong, and chastising her for disappointing him. The familiar but heartbreaking reprimands actually soothe her, and the exhausted young elf soon drifts off to sleep.

And she dreams.

***

She awakens to the sound of furniture breaking. Brynwyn gasps, and sits straight up in her bedding. In the moonlight coming in through her window, she sees a huge form, smashing everything within reach. It is an orc, and its presence in her hut causes her confusion. She becomes vaguely aware of the commotion outside her window, the sounds of elves fighting off an orc invasion. Brynwyn stays perfectly still, too afraid to move or even breathe.

Brynwyn hears a scream. Across the room, her younger brother has awakened to see the hulking monster. Alerted by the cry, the orc turns and grabs the elven boy by his head, dangling him high in the air. With her brother in danger, Brynwyn finds a reserve of bravery and searches around the floor beside her, never taking her eyes off the orc. She stretches her fingers blindly until she finds the bow and a single arrow. She draws back the bowstring, trying to aim carefully, but her arms shake. She only has one chance at this.

The orc's fingers encapsulate the elven boy's entire head, and the monster delights in hearing his pathetic, hitching screams. Brynwyn has no idea how many arrows it would take to kill this orc, but she hopes one is enough to make it let go of her brother. She aims for the creature's left eye, wishing she had more time to line up and steady her shot. With a quick prayer to Silvanus, she looses the arrow.

But her fingers slip at the moment of release, and the arrow barely penetrates the orc's shoulder. It growls in pain, clenching its massive hands into fists. Her brother's head is shattered like an egg, and Brynwyn's own heart feels similarly crushed. The orc turns to face her, growling and snarling. She doesn't move as the orc lumbers towards her, reaching out with its immense hands. She blankly watches the remains of her brother drip from its fingers. She no longer cares what happens to her. She drops her bow and lets her arms fall to her sides.

Suddenly, it howls in pain. It runs blindly around the hut, beating on the walls with its fists until it finally collapses to the floor, dead. There are several arrows buried in its back. Brynwyn looks up and sees her parents standing in the doorway, bows in hand. Her mother looks at Brynwyn with concern. As she moves to comfort her daughter, her eyes fall on the headless body of her dead son.

And she screams.

***

Another loud thunderclap wakes Brynwyn with a start. The dream fades, as it always does. The memories still linger, still haunt her. The elf slowly realizes where she is... still sitting on the forest floor, in the rain and the mud, hugging her knees and shivering. She wishes she were home... but would not dare to go back.

She pulls her belongings closer to her, and huddles even closer to the tree.

And she weeps.
